Description of proposed project

For more than twenty years Dundas County Hospice has been providing an Adult Day Hospice program in a variety of formats. Finally in 2015, a weekly gathering, in a home-like setting, for our more mobile clients with life-limiting illnesses was formalized and funded. Unfortunately, because our services are connected to the healthcare system, there have been changes in our funding formula which means this service is no longer funded. We are currently in the position of having to increase our fundraising efforts to maintain this valuable and necessary service. Our mission is to provide comfort, care and compassion enabling the best possible quality of life for people living with a life-threatening illness.

Our Adult Day Hospice Program is only one of the many programs we provide for our clients, but it fulfills our mission as it provides clients from across Dundas County with rest and relaxation, supportive relationships, opportunities to enjoy a good meal and maybe even learn something new. In addition, this program provides respite and ease of mind for caregivers because they know that their loved one is being cared for in a professional and caring setting. Dundas County Hospice provides transportation to anyone who needs it, they provide a warm and nutritious meal, plan group activities and provide complimentary therapies as necessary. We give our clients this very valuable experience without any cost to them. Due to this funding change, however, Dundas County Hospice is requesting $10 000 in order to continue running the Adult Day Hospice Program for the next year.

A Day Hospice client has said,
“The Day Hospice program takes me away from what’s happening at home. I don’t have to think about how my breathing is. I can just think about seeing my friends and enjoy time with people who understand what I may be feeling.”

Description of proposed project

Dundas Manor Long-Term Care (LTC) Home is the only home offering 24/7 health care to residents of Dundas County and area. It has been an essential part of our local healthcare system for 45 years, helping to keep families together even while living separately due to health challenges.

The current building is deteriorating. It’s too small, crowded and dated. It is one of the worst LTC buildings in Ontario. There is a lack of space, storage, and privacy – for both residents and staff. The halls are cluttered with supplies and are difficult to maneuver through. The dining rooms are too small, and some residents have to eat their meals in the hallways. The home does not meet accessibility standards, and it’s difficult for staff to assist residents with some daily, personal care. Renovations won’t fix this problem.

A new home is needed.

The estimated cost of the new home is $63 million; the community has currently given about $12.5 million of the $18 million we need to raise locally. The ground-breaking ceremony took place in December, and work has started on the site! We expect to move the residents into their new home in the Spring of 2026!

The support of this group will help us meet this goal; providing a larger, more accessible home to 30 additional residents, and providing all the comforts of home. Every donation makes a difference and will help make this dream a reality.

Description of proposed project

Operation Backpack addresses food insecurity in North Dundas by providing 78 vulnerable children with food to eat over the weekends. The bags of food consist of 2 breakfasts 2 lunches and 4 healthy snacks including 2 fresh veggies or fruit. Food items are high in protein and fibre. The bags of food are placed into children’s backpacks at 4 local schools: Winchester Public School, Nationview Public School, Chesterville Public School and St. Mary’s Catholic School. We know that children who come to school with full bellies are ready to learn. The costs of these bags of food has grown over the past few years and is now between $7 and $8 a bag depending what food items are provided each week. We provide the bags from September until June. $10,000 will cover the costs of the bags for 18 weeks, almost half of the school year.

Carefor Nor-Dun Support Centre

Description of proposed project

The Nor-Dun Support Centre is Carefor Health and Community Services’ and Eastern Ontario’s largest integrated and holistic hub for adults over 55+, people with disabilities, and caregivers. Our centre offers social-recreation programs, congregate dining, foot and wellness care, meals on wheels and more. On a weekly basis, we enrich the lives of over 300 North Dundas adults, helping them live vibrantly and independently. We offer essential services to some of our most isolated and vulnerable residents.

With the change in climate and increase in extreme weather events, our centre is experiencing more frequent losses of power. On these occasions, not only do our programs halt, but we risk the loss of food, damage to expensive appliances, and flooding of basement. This disruption effects our entire centre, leaving our clients without the services they require. Carefor has already experienced two major basement floods, one in 2017 and most recently in 2023 with the damages totaling over $20,000.

We are asking the 100 + Women of North Dundas for insurance in the form of an emergency generator. The installation and cost is approximately $22,826. As we have already had three power-related issues in the month of March where we had to cancel programs, we would like to have the generator installed as soon as possible. We are seeking confidence that our centre will remain operational during extreme weather events and our clients’ and community’s health needs will not be impacted. We thank you for your consideration.
